From the New Sanctuary Movement:
Dear members, friends, and supporters:
Last Thursday, April 3, more than 100 individuals representing 34 congregations gathered outside the ICE office in Philadelphia to defend sensitive locations and to send a firm message: ICE has no place in our churches, our temples, our synagogues, our mosques, or any sacred space. We define the sacred, not Trump.
We are deeply grateful to the clergy and religious leaders who helped plan the action, to all who came out, who spoke, who made signs, and who brought items to build the altar in front of ICE.
The altar we built together symbolized that the sacred is not confined to any building but it is up to us to let radical love, inclusion and justice flow through the world – even at ICE. And in the face of intimidation, when DHS agents stepped outside in an attempt to unsettle us, we offered them bread as a gesture of our commitment to embodying the values of love in action. Our NSM lenses captured the moment—see the picture below.
The Philadelphia Inquirer captured the spirit of the day in a powerful video that shows how we brought the sacred to ICE. You can watch the video here. Also special thanks to Rodney Atienza for their stunning photos that captured the essence of our gathering.
What’s next? Let’s take action! Call your U.S. Representative and Senators today and urge them to support H.R.1061 – the Protecting Sensitive Locations Act. Dial the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and make your voice heard!
If your congregation wants to join us, you can become a member of the New SanctuaryMovement. Visit our website and email to at [email protected] for more details.
Thank you for embodying love, hope and resistance. Together, we fight for justice and compassion, standing firm to ensure our places of worship and our communities are safe and sacred.
