This week, the Senate passed “Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill” which combines tax cuts for the wealthiest, spending hikes on defense and border security, and cuts to vital social safety net programs into one giant package. Any day now, the package will be voted on by the House. While the funding of crucial programs such such as Medicaid and SNAP are being gutted, massive new funding is being spent to support the administration’s aggressive and cruel deportation policies. These are:
- $80 billion for ICE to escalate its immigration enforcement plans;
- A 300-500% increase for the ICE detention budget, and
- An additional $30 billion for ICE’s other immigration enforcement efforts and $5 billion for CBP to operate interior check-points.
The passage of the reconciliation bill, comes just days after the Supreme Court ruled to allow partial implementation of Trump’s unconstitutional attacks on birthright citizenship.
