Regional VFP hosted Zoom meeting

Topic: How can Veterans For Peace and Labor Work Together?

Date: Tuesday, May 20, 2025Time: 4:30pm PT, 5:30pm MT, 6:30pm CT,  7:30pm ET

May Day (May 1st) has been International Workers’ Day since 1889. We have chosen this month’s zoom to honor May Day and the struggles of labor worldwide.

This is especially appropriate as Donald Trump has declared war on working people.

Join us on Tuesday, May 20th at 7:30 pm ET for “How can Veterans For Peace and Labor Work Together?”.

Mark Dimondstein is President of the American Postal Workers Union, which represents more than 200,000 employees of the U.S. Postal Service and approximately 1,500 employees in the private-sector mailing industry. He began his first three-year term in November 2013 and is currently serving his fourth three-year term.

Since taking office, Dimondstein has transformed the APWU into a fighting, activist organization. He helped establish A Grand Alliance to Save Our Public Postal Service, strengthened the unity among the four postal unions, helped forge the Campaign for Postal Banking, and led the successful fight against a privatization scheme involving the office-supply chain, Staples. While in office, he has consistently fought for a public Postal Service that emphasizes the unity between the demands of postal workers for a good contract and the demands of the American people for an expanded, vibrant, public Postal Service. He has been a consistent voice for bringing the war dollars home and having the basic needs of the working class take priority over the growing military industrial-complex.

Rose Roach is the National Coordinator for the Labor Campaign for Single Payer and Chair of Healthcare for All Minnesota.  Ms. Roach retired in 2023 as the Executive Director of the MN Nurses Association after working in the labor movement for 34 years.  For more than two decades, Ms. Roach has been involved in the healthcare justice movement, both as a national speaker and trainer.

Mark Smith, occupational therapist, is president of National Federation of Federal Employees Local 1, representing healthcare workers at the Veterans Health Administration. He also serves on the steering committee for the Federal Unionists Network (FUN).

John Braxton is a long-time a leader in the peace and labor movements. As a college student he became a crewmember of the Quaker ship Phoenix that delivered medical supplies to North Vietnam during the war, in violation of Federal law. He was a draft resister and served 16 ½ months in Federal prison for refusing to cooperate with the conscription system. He worked for 20 years in the reform movement within the Teamsters union, and helped prepare for the 1997 national UPS strike, which created 10,000 new full-time jobs.

He also taught at Community College of Philadelphia, where he was co-president of the American Federation of Teachers union there. He was a founding member of US Labor Against the War and Philadelphia Jobs with Justice and has helped to build the Labor Network for Sustainability. He is an associate member of Veterans for Peace and a member of the VFP Labor Working Group.
