Sunrise Philly: Lots of New Members. Next Steps & Next Meeting June 8

From Sunrise Movement, Philly Chapter:

💛 Updates from our Care team 💛

Part of our goal this quarter has been to expand our mutual aid and collective care work. We’re focused on this because we know that the world is really hard right now, and showing our members that we care about you as people, not just bodies at an event, matters!

Building community, in a moment when fascist and conservative forces are trying to isolate us, is a critical act of resistance!

We want to update you on three developments on the People Power + Care side of things.

Monthly Community Cooking
Thanks to a burst of energy from new members, we’ve been able to expand and refine our monthly community cooking pilot to incorporate donations from Sharing Excess.

We need folks to help out here from both the receiving and the making ends!

Our next cooking date is Friday, May 30. If you are available to help with any of the following, please let us know through this form and someone from the team will reach out.

 • cooking – usually late morning
 • delivery driving – Friday afternoon/Saturday
 • coordinating logistics – remote, before, or day of

If you can’t help out this week, but might be interested next month, fill out the form and let us know!

We currently produce between 30-50 meals a month. Ideally we’d like to distribute 75+ (for economies of scale).

If you, or anyone you know would benefit from receiving ready-made vegan meals delivered to your home or office, please let us know through this interest form.

Sunrise Movers & Helping Hands

Thanks to a grant, we have been able to secure the use of a pick-up truck and are piloting a Sunrise member moving support project. After our first test run, we’ve realized that there are two important parts to making this project work:

1. Having folks help move things on the day, and
2. Having folks offer to help packing/unpacking before and after the move.

If this is a project you’d like to help support, please let us know in the signal Chatter group and we’ll loop you in.
If you have a move or a big item pick up that you know is coming, let us know here as soon as possible

Upcoming projects • Socials & co-working
We’re coordinating more regular social activities and co-working sessions. These will be spaces for us to have fun and remind one another that despite the chaos, we have community. We hope to get the first of these off the ground by mid-June! If you have suggestions for free, fun activities and/or good co-working spaces, let us know via Signal or email!
 • Member Resource Directory

Our hub is made up of some pretty amazing people, and we want to tap into that. We are in the process of putting together a “member resource directory” that will serve as a guide to the skills, knowledge and resources that all of our members might be able to offer one another, so that when you need help on something you know who to ask!

We will also be compiling a Philly community resource guide – a reference to some of the free and low-cost resources in the city that we think will make life a little easier for Sunrisers trying to thrive in these times. If you have ideas for resources you’d like to see – let us know!
💫UPCOMING EVENTS & OPPORTUNITIES💫

➡️ We’re heading to Harrisburg with Transit For All PA for a rally and lobby day on Wednesday, June 4. Let’s meet with our state legislators to share our stories and tell them: Pennsylvania deserves transit that moves all of us! Sign up here to join!

Budget hearings might be over, but we’re keeping the pressure up on City Council! These next 2 weeks, we’re giving another big push to win our demands for a People’s Budget

❤️🔥 Here’s what’s happening:

Thursday, May 29th – Join OnePA & Philly Thrive for a day of action! We’re planning to have a big presence at caucus & council session, followed by some lobbying to advocate for the Safe Healthy Homes Act. Please meet us at 8:30am outside Room 319A; a lite breakfast will be provided 🥐

Tuesday, June 3rd – Pack City Hall for the Safe Healthy Homes Act! City Council’s Housing Committee will be voting on the Safe Healthy Homes Act and we need every person who can make it to show up to make sure Council passes these bills! Please join us from 12-5pm; dinner will be provided right after!

You can RSVP here ✊🏾

Clean up at the Community College of Philadelphia with us! On Saturday, June 7 at 11am, we’re meeting at CCP’s main campus (1700 Spring Garden Street) to do a block clean up.

Shoutout to our friends at YCL (above) with whom we cleaned up the block around Kingsessing Library in April!

Sign up to join us here.

Our next chapter meeting will be Sunday, June 8 at 1pm. We’ll be providing team updates and discussing upcoming events and action opportunities. Sign up here!
