WAR NO MORE
A Memorial Day Message from Veterans For Peace
This Memorial Day weekend, Veterans For Peace calls on our members and friends to reflect on the gravity of the day, whose official purpose is to “honor all those who died in service to the U.S. during peacetime and war.”
Veterans For Peace chooses to honor ALL who have died in wars, both civilians and combatants. Our hope is that a sober accounting of the casualties of war will mitigate against the tendency to turn Memorial Day – like Veterans Day – into a patriotic celebration of U.S. militarism.
We remember the words of President Eisenhower, who, during World War II, was the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe:
“I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.”
Veterans For Peace is deeply familiar with the pain that emanates from the loss of those lives. We have lost too many friends in wars in foreign lands, and in their aftermath at home due to suicide and service-related diseases. We have spent countless hours with Gold Star families mourning the loss of their loved ones. We also recognize that the “enemy” killed by our bullets and bombs had family and friends who loved them too. Their pain is no different than ours.
The pain and suffering of the U.S.’s endless war persist today, with tens of thousands dying in conflicts that are fueled by U.S.-supplied arms and “intelligence.” The U.S. was an instigator of the terrible war in Ukraine, where hundreds of thousands of young soldiers have perished. The U.S. continues to provide bombs and political cover for the unspeakable genocide in Gaza, where estimates of civilian death range from 50,000 to over 100,000, with an even greater number of life-altering wounds.
Wars will not end until there is a sea-change in the thinking of the U.S. people and our political leaders. We must abandon the military doctrine of seeking “full spectrum dominance” in every corner of the globe. We must help build a peaceful world based on mutual respect for the human rights of all, as well as the rights of nature. As the Vietnam-era poster reads, “War is not good for children or other living things.”
This Memorial Day, let us honor the memory of the dead by pledging to protect our precious planet, its people, and its environment. Rather than exalting war, we must come together to abolish war once and for all.

Excerpts:
On Thursday, a coalition of military veterans, religious and humanitarian organizations commenced a 40-day Veterans & Allies Fast for Gaza in New York City, organized by Veterans For Peace along with 28 co-sponsoring organizations. The fast officially kicked off with a news conference at 10:00 am, at the Isaiah Wall near the United Nations headquarters in New York City, moving to the U.S. Mission to the UN, where the fast will be conducted from May 22 to June 30. The fast was organized in response to Israel’s final deadly assault to empty Gaza of its people by starvation and exile. A statement from the fasters condemned the genocide, saying, “We are horrified and outraged that Israel is using starvation as a war tactic in clear violation of international law, and we condemn our government’s complicity in the genocide of the Palestinian people.” The fasters’ demands are twofold: (a) full humanitarian aid to Gaza under UN authority and (b) no more U.S. weapons to Israel. Veterans For Peace members fasting in New York include:Joy Metzler (23, Cocoa, Florida), co-founder of Serivcemembers For Ceasefire, USAF Academy 2023 graduate, who left the Air Force and became a conscientious objector, citing U.S. aggression in the Middle East and the continued ethnic cleansing in all of Palestine and massacre of Palestinians in Gaza. Save Our VA – DC Advocacy a Success The SOVA team met the staff of 20 Members of Congress (MOCs) in Washington, DC from April 28 to May 1, including 9 of the 11 Democratic members of the House Veterans Affairs Committee (HVAC) and 5 Democratic members of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee (SVAC).All the staff of VAC members were knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and very receptive to us SOVA team members and our goals. One of their recommendations was to lobby Republican representatives in swing districts. Only 3 Republicans need to join Democrats to block bills that move to further privatize the VA.If you live in a swing district, emailing, calling or, best of all, visiting local staff or the member in person during a Congressional recess can go far in blocking these bills. Contact SOVA at sovamail@yahoo.com for more information. If you haven’t already signed up to receive SOVA action updates to send letters to your MOCs, do it now!SIGN UP TO HELP SAVE OUR VA |
